WEEK 2
In the Critical Literacy class for this week, we had been exposed to one of the article title ‘Battling the bullies’. The article is about a six years old boy that had been bullied by his schoolmate. From this story, the writer tries to find the solution to overcome this problem. The writer also gains advice from the educational psychologist. It showed that the writer is really determined to decrease the number of bullying cases. From the article and also explanation by Miss Syida, it can be conclude that bullying should not be practiced, even for the tertiary student. It is because bullying can give a bad long-term effect towards the victim and also the bullies.
Presentation for this week started with boys group that unable to present earlier. Three or them, which are Muaz, Ridhwan, and Afif seem succeed to attract viewer to their presentation title ‘Stories and Fact’. According to the text, stories are about what had happened, usually to the person telling the story. As example, ghost stories that had been told to scared the children. It can be a true story that told by that people or maybe they just make up the story to scare the children. In addition, stories can be fictional or real. On the other hand, fact is information that is based in concrete evidence that cannot be change. For example, our country gets independent on 31 August 1957. It is a true fact that remains forever and nothing can change it. In conclusion, there are differences between stories and fact, which is stories based on what had happened and been told by others meanwhile fact is something that really happened and have evidence.
Other group that present on the same day is Adwa’s group. Adwa, Zulikha, and Lieyana really committed in their presentation title ‘Language, perspective and Ideology’. Based on my opinion, their group had done an excellent job by making the presentation become interesting and funny. They also make their own session, which is by asking to the class a few question. Those that succeed to answer it correctly will get a lollipop from them. The presenter also confident in answering back inquiries from classmate. From the presentation, language is a systematic means of communicating by the use of sound and conventional symbol. One of the examples of language is English, which is a worldwide language. Language can also found on the extract of newspaper report. Perspective means the appearance of things relative to another as determined by their distance from the viewer. Meanwhile, ideology can be defined as a system of idea and principles which based on political and economic theory. An example of ideology is communism by Karl Marx. The ideology is actually bring to the benefit, but the people that interpret the ideology apply it wrongly.
The next presentation is about ‘Text and Textualities’ presented by Fahaida, Shima, Khatijah, and Fatin. Text can be defined as combination of signs while textualities is the visual effect and heading that using in article. As example, in a cigarette advertisement, the company develop a myth towards viewer that the cigarette brand ‘Dunhill Deluxe’ is valuable to buy. From the text ‘Always in good taste’, the advertisement wanted people to believe that their product is in the best quality by using the text. A visual effect of cigarette with lighter also features, in order to attract the viewer.

Reflection on Blog (Week 1)
This week we had been given a task to make a portfolio about Convicted killer. Miss Syida, my lecturer for Critical Literacy patiently guides us on how to make a good portfolio. Surely, introduce for this new subject is really challenging. For our first encounter, we had to make a review on article title ‘Convicted Killer’. According to Miss Syida, when read an article, we should not trust it completely.
It happened when I read the article about ‘Convicted Killer’. This article is about a nurse name Deborah Parry that convicted for a kill of her own colleague in Saudi Arabia. My first impression when I first look at her picture is she looks quite innocent. It’s hard to imagine a nurse to involve with a crime. Based on our review, we had to complete the portfolio task and answer all the questions that related with the article. Surely, without Miss Syida guidance, I completely at loss, as drowning into the wide sea.
We also had to listen for a presentation by our classmate. The group member consists of Fiza, Syuhada, Atiqah and Fatimah. Supposedly, there should be two group presented on that day. However, one of the group unable to present it on that day because of several reason. Fiza’s group presents the topic about ‘Rules and Regulations’. In my opinion, their group had done a good by presenting all the information needed for this topic.
Based on their presentation, rules mean an instruction for behaving in ways while regulation means a rule or instruction that must be obeyed. Rules can be divided into two categories which is imperative and declarative. Imperative can be defined as give command and should be taken seriously. As example, ‘I order you’. However, declarative sound more be taken seriously. For example, I order parent’. This phrase showed the order is not focusing on certain people like imperative, it more focusing on a group, which is parent.
There are differences between rules and regulations. Rules can be making by anyone, even I can make my own rules. For example, if I am on diet, I have to make a rule for myself to control my appetite. However, regulation cannot be simply made by ordinary people. It has to be making by people in high rank to ensure the stability of a community or organization. For our last class activity, Miss Syida had asked us to mark our friend paper. It almost takes about half an hour to mark my friend paper. In conclusion, this activity quite interesting because from my friend answer, I can compare it with my own answer. I also get to know a few mistakes that make by me by marking my friend answer sheet.
