Week 9

To make the learning style become more interesting, Miss Syida had conducted role play activity during two hour class on Friday. It’s really fun because all students are given a chance to choose the way of presenting their topic, such as by role play, poem or choral speaking. During the session, it begins with male group which consist of Muaz and his other members. They had been given a topic in the reading title ‘Drugs or Guns’ and they use role play as a medium to deliver their topic. It quite interesting when they make the scene likely at mamak stalls and at the same time they use their creativity to include about the drugs or guns topic in their role play.

As for our group, the title that delivers by our group is about ‘Out of puff’ where we used poem as a medium to present on the topic. Therefore, we used our own understanding and not too rely with the reading, as we wanted to make it more interesting and fun. For example, we used the sentence ‘like a full variety bucket of KFC’, to show variety of danger that we gain by just one puff of cigarette. Everyone knew that KFC had variety of food in their bucket meal such as marsh potato, coleslaw, bun and chicken and people are really attracted with the food. Same goes with cigarette, as it contain variety of dangerous ingredient like tar and nicotine. On the other hand, cigarette bring negative effect because it contain a lot of dangerous.

Week 8

During this week learning, Miss Syida had asked us to make 10 elements on the next reading. We also had been divided to certain group to make the task more easily done. Therefore, when doing the job in a group, the task is managing well. It can be said that the article is quite confusing to understand. In addition, we had been exposed to the new chapter of our study which is ‘Invasion of the Baby Snatcher’, which is the article from the Time Magazine date August 2006 and written by Walter Kirn. At first, when I first look through the title, what’s came in my mind is about the abduction of children and also toddlers. However, my expectation quite differs from the true meaning of the article itself. I totally misunderstood about the message that tries to deliver by the writer. It is actually about the role of mass media to overcome the problem of children abduction. On the other hand, the media seem interested on the issue of child abduction and always find news on the issue. It can be seen through the statement by the writer which is “What, no kidnapped kids today? Well, find some!
By this statement, it showed the eagerness of the people in media field to have kidnapped cases, as they believe it will increase the rating of their company. There is other thing that needs to consider by those in media rather than to make stories of kidnapping where no solution is provided. They should focus on more important issue like children that is abused by their parents and also or abandoned by their own parents. This should be the main focus of the media, rather than used hot stuff stories, as the way to increase their rating. Overall, the writer condemned the media people because the media seems facing the problem of having the issue of double standard in reporting news.
WEEK 7
This week Miss Syida had explained us with one of the article from Reader’s Digest which consist in the reading book. Therefore, the title of this week subject is Australia’s Methadone Mess. It had been written by Mc Mahon, Siobhan in page 19-25 on May 1998. It reflected on the using of methadone among the heroin addicts since 1985. The use of graph in the article as visual aids is really being helpful because it can make me understand the whole article more deeply. If it just depend on the article itself, the article is quite hard to understand. In addition, the article also put statistic figure to make the reader convinced with the point that deliver by them. This article could be categorized as critical subject, as we need to understand the article further and also the high lexis of some word also make it difficult to achieve the goal of understanding the article. It also purposes to educate the reader on the effect of addicted to ‘heroine’.

Week 6

For our previous portfolio task we had been given a task based on the reading book for CL. However, for the two last portfolio tasks, the task will be assigned by our lecturer. For our class, there is two article comes from different source.

The first article is from magazine. The using of word in this article is quite hard to be understand, suit with the labeled of this magazine which is an international magazine. The headline for this article is The Moment 12/08/08: Guantanamo Bay. Based from this article, it bring the reader towards the trial of 9/11 suspect which is Khalid Sheikh Mohammad. He admit guilty for the accusing of murder over 3000 people. However, his action only showed his protest towards the Guantanamo trial. He doesn’t have faith to believe that the court will judge him fairly. In addition, he willingly to pleading guilty rather than wasting his time with all kind of trial and realized he will ended in prison.

Another article comes from a local newspaper. The headline is The UN proves-once again-its toothless nature. From the beginning of the headlines, the writer had sarcastically condemned UN. UN as a world largest organization seems failed to control Zionism cruelty towards Palestinian. Thus, it proves that they are also afraid to take any privileges action in overcome this problem. Instead of blaming Zionist, they accused Hamas to be responsible for the Zionist assault in Gaza. It obviously showed that UN is afraid to come out with resolution. By hook or by crook, an immediate action by UN should be taken to help Palestinian from Zionist.

Week 5

This week, Miss Syida had taught us on positioning. Based from her explanation, positioning is about how writer construct the people in the text and how the writer construct the reader. As example, in article title ’Please let me go to your school’ the writer had constructed Scarlett ,as if she should be given a chance to continue her study although she is disable. The writer showed her disappointment towards the school action that didn’t allowed Scarlett to study at their school However, the writer only stated the statement that support Scarlett by not including the explanation by the school towards their action. Thus, it showed that the writer had being bias because only include the statement from one side. By making Scarlett as the object of attention, it develop a feeling if sympathize towards the reader.
On Friday, my group had been present the topic about Types of Exposition. After few weeks commending over other people group, the time’s has come for me and my partner Syairiah to present our topic. Exposition can be divide into two categories which is hortatory and analytical. Hortatory exposition can be seen in letter to editor or political speech while analytical is written at examination answers and essay writing.
Hortatory play with more feeling and attitude because wanted people to give action or react towards certain problem. In contrast, analytical didn’t use feeling because the aim of the writing is only to accomplish their goal and feeling is not required. As example, when we were given a task on essay writing, we are determined to finish it and therefore it does not include our feeling like hortatory writing. It can be conclude that exposition can influence the reader and it can be persuasive.

Week 4

This week 3 group presents their topic in Critical Literacy class. For the 1st group, they present Reading 4.4, title Statistic. Those that involved in this presentation are Fahmi and Subhi. According to the presentation, statistic can be defined in two meaning. Firstly, it refers to inform about any phenomenon and activity expressed in rhetorical. Another meaning is, it denotes the art of and science of collecting, presenting, analyzing and interpreting numerical data. There are 4 common statistic slip. First, unqualified averages, fallacious sampling, percentage accompanied by actual numbers and misleading presentation.
Topic on Crooked and Fallacious Thinking is presented by Noor and Shafinaz. Both of them used mind map in their presentation. Therefore, it makes the presentation to be easily understood. Based on their presentation, crooked and fallacious thinking is all about trying to make people believe in what they see. As example, “All tall people are brave”. “All brave people are highly-educated”. “Therefore, all highly-educated people are brave.” From this sentence, it provide crooked and fallacious thinking that make people believe “all brave people are highly educated” although it might turn out differently.
The last group that present is Fazli and Bazilah. The title of their presentation is What is the evidence? Based on their presentation, evidence means the facts, signs, and objects that make you believe something is true. There are two types of evidence. Firstly is tangible evidence. Tangible evidence can be seen in the famous case of the kidnapping of the infant son of Charles Lindbergh that led to to conviction and execution of Bruno Hauptman. Example for tangible evidence is a broken ladder, chisel and ransom notes. Secondly is eye-witnessed evidence. In the Sacco-Vanzatti case, Mary Splaine that works in factory heard a shot and saw an automobile crossing the tracks. She was just in her time of vision for two or three second only. Based on what she had seen, she accused Sacco-Vaccati. It can be concluding that ‘Don’t ever trust to what you have heard, see, and read’.
