WEEK 3
This week, two group present for Critical Literacy class. The first group that present on that day consists of Rozaida and Atikah. Both of them present the topic about ‘Linguistic perspective’. Linguistic can be defined as the scientific study of language. The readings come out two type of text. Text A is categorized as discussion. It is because it includes positive and negative sides. It will become argument and therefore allowed discussion that provides different ideas. Text B is a report and a standard genre in the science and social science. This text present as ‘fact’ and there is no room for argument.
Based from the reading, it showed that even a simple text able to manipulate and influence the reader. For example, even if the text short and simple, as long as it persuasive it can influence the reader. The text that combines with pictures also helps the reader understanding and therefore can convince the reader into believing the point that highlight by the writer. As example, when we read a text, the pictures provide can help to illustrate what the writer try to deliver.
Next group present about ‘Speech and Speakers: the formation of individuals in discourse and genre’. This topic presented by Teha and Hayat. In this presentation, they also made a short role-play, so we will more understand about the points that try to deliver by them. It is quite interesting for them in using this method, in order to attract the audience. Discourse can be defined as a serious conversation through modes of talking. One of the most thoroughly studies is sexism. For example, there are two types of women in office. First women are describing as Miss Seductress in office because of her seductive attitude and she gains her job by seducing her boss. Another type is Miss Winner that showed her confident to get a job. In addition, she used her own abilities, rather than being seductress.
Reading position is construct by discourse, which is the verbal ‘expression’ were expressed through speech and writing. It means through speech and writing, someone can express their personal view and also impression towards any subject. Speaker is not an individual or non-social. Through the speaker, people will learn an experience by using language.
